Sore Throat

Not all sore throats are necessarily a sign of Strep. While Strep throat can certainly be common in winter months and among children, a sore throat can have many causes such as the common cold and flu.

The first sign of a many common illnesses is dry, scratchy throat along with a hoarse voice. Sometimes when you look inside, the throat might appear red or even a little swollen and you might find that swallowing has become a bit painful.

You can start by first trying simple, home remedies like salt-water gargles or over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If these do not seem to give any relief or the throat pain become worse, seek further medical care.

If your sore throat is combined with swollen glands, yellow-pus-filled pockets in the back of the throat, or if you note foul smelling breath, seek further medical care.

If any of the following symptoms appear, also seek medical attention:

• Difficulty swallowing or breathing
• Neck pain or difficulty in moving neck
• Children, with throat pain, excess salivation, difficulty moving neck, difficulty speaking.
